Storage Tips.

A little planning goes a long way. Here's what we've learned from years of helping Centre County customers move in, organize their units, and protect their stuff — so your move goes smooth and your belongings stay in great shape.

Plan First, Move Once.

The best storage experience starts before you ever pull up to the gate. A bit of planning saves time, prevents damage, and helps you find what you need months later. Work the three phases below for a smooth move-in.

1
Before You Arrive
  • Measure your largest items so you pick a unit that actually fits — don't guess
  • Use uniform box sizes when possible; they stack tighter and waste less space
  • Label boxes on at least two sides — top labels disappear under stacks
  • Gather more supplies than you think you'll need: bubble wrap, blankets, tape, markers
  • Photograph electronics and valuables before packing, just in case
2
Loading Day
  • Heaviest items go in first — appliances, dressers, anything that anchors the bottom
  • Leave a center aisle so you can reach things in back without unloading the front
  • Disassemble bed frames, tables, and bulky furniture — store hardware in labeled bags
  • Stand mattresses upright against a wall to save floor space
  • Place fragile items in clearly marked boxes, near the top, away from edges
3
After Move-In
  • Keep an inventory list — note what's in each box and roughly where it sits
  • Visit periodically, especially after harsh winter weather
  • Check that your padlock is in good shape and the door seal still seats properly
  • Refresh moisture absorbers (silica or DampRid) every few months for sensitive items
  • If you reorganize, take a photo of the layout — your future self will thank you

Know What Belongs Inside.

Most household and business items store beautifully in a clean, dry unit — but a few things really shouldn't go in storage. Here's a quick guide to what works and what doesn't, so your stuff stays safe and you stay within our terms.

Stores Well
Safe for self storage
  • Furniture & Mattresses Cover with blankets or sheets to keep dust off finishes.
  • Seasonal Items Holiday decor, winter gear, summer patio furniture, sports equipment.
  • Business Records & Files Pack in plastic bins, not cardboard, to keep moisture out long-term.
  • Tools & Equipment Wipe down before storing; oil exposed metal parts to prevent rust.
  • Vehicles, ATVs & Motorcycles Stabilize fuel, disconnect batteries, cover with a breathable cover.
  • Electronics (Properly Packed) Original boxes are best; use anti-static packing for sensitive gear.
Don't Store
Not allowed or not safe
  • Food & Perishables Attracts pests and creates odors — even sealed pantry items.
  • Plants & Live Animals No light, no airflow — never appropriate for storage.
  • Hazardous Materials Gasoline, propane, paint, solvents, fireworks — fire and safety risk.
  • Anything Wet or Damp Dry everything fully before storing — mildew spreads to nearby items.
  • Irreplaceable Originals Alone Birth certificates, wills, key documents — store copies; keep originals secure elsewhere.
  • Illegal or Stolen Items Goes without saying — but it's in your lease for a reason.
